Silvertown Quays development gets green light

The £3.5bn SIlvertown Quays development has been given outline planning permission from Newham Council.

Located on the 62 acre Royal Docks site, the project will create London’s next major business district and will offer 2m sq ft of commercial property space, as well as 3m sq ft of brand spaces and 3,000 new homes.

Formerly known as the warehouse of the world, at the height of its success, it is hoped the regeneration of the Royal Docks will create around 21,000 jobs in the next 10 years, thanks to the variety of office, retail and leisure space that will be available.

Simon Webster, Silvertown Partnership Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to receive the go-ahead for this vital scheme. This part of London is now destined to be a creative hub for our capital, offering a new, easily accessible location for innovative businesses, as well as housing for Londoners and amazing new brand experiences to attract visitors from the UK and abroad.”

Newham Council believe that the site will attract around 13m visitors a year and provide a £33m boost per year to the local economy.

The Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, said: “This multi-billion pound transformation is a fantastic opportunity to reinvigorate the Royal Docks area giving it a new lease of life benefiting Newham and the capital as a whole.

“Our vision is to transform the area into a world class business centre that not just entices established companies but also creates an exciting and vibrant place for new companies to grow and flourish.”

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2018, in time for new Crossrail connections.
