On the eastern coast of Scotland, Tayside has an industrial past based around textiles although now much of the regions economy is based on digital media, bioscience, manufacturing, oil and gas. The main commercial and retail centre in Tayside is Dundee, although Perth provides such services as well. Much of the population of Tayside is concentrated to the south-east of the region, near the mouth of the River Tay and the coast. The A92 connects Dundee to towns along the coast whilst the A90 and A9 cut north through the central and western regions of the county.
