Created in 1974 and home to the Angel of the North, Tyne and Wear developed around the mouths of the River Tyne and River Wear as they empty into the North Sea. The A1M and A194M run into the county from the south whilst A roads from across the county converge at the heavily populated area of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
