The Orkney Islands are comprised of 70 individual islands situated off the north east coast of Scotland where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Due to their position, in midsummer the sun barely sinks below the horizon line and in autumn the Northern Lights can be seen. The commercial and administrative centre of the islands is Kirkwall on Mainland. This is the largest of the islands and the centre of transportation for the region. A number of A roads cross this island providing access to its towns and ports which run ferry services to other islands as well as mainland Scotland including Lerwick, Aberdeen, and John o’Groats. The airport at Kirkwall runs flights to the Shetland Islands and to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow on the Scottih mainland.
