The county of Nottinghamshire borders with South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire. The traditional County town is Nottingham although the current county council is based is West Bridgford. The site of Sherwood Forest, the legendary home to Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Nottinghamshire boasts a contrast of large commercial towns, historic market towns and rural villages. The city of Nottingham is known as the commercial and retail centre of the county whilst other major commercial and retail centres include Mansfield, Worksop and Chesterfield.
The M1 runs through the county connecting Nottinghamshire’s towns to London to the south and Leeds to the North. The Midland Main Line runs through Nottingham as it connects London St Pancras station to Sheffield whilst the East Coast Main Line service from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh via Leeds, York and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne also stops at Newark and Retford in the eastern region of Nottinghamshire.
