Berkshire is one of the oldest counties in England formed when King Alfred the Great set the county boundaries. Now the county shares borders with Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Greater London. The region is also known as the Royal County of Berkshire due to the presence of the Royal residence Windsor Castle. Other attractions to the county include the National Trust sites of Ashdown House and Basildon Park. Berkshire’s County town is Reading. This is a major commercial and retail centre of the county whilst other important commercial centres include Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead.
The M3 and M4 motorways run through the county linking to the M25 and London to the east and Southampton to the south and Bristol to the west respectively.
